IEC 60068 Environmental Testing: Which Chamber Does Each Test Require?

IEC 60068 environmental testing covers distinct test methods, so the standard part and selected procedure matter when choosing an environmental test chamber. SANWOOD supplies environmental simulation equipment, including temperature humidity test chambers, rapid temperature change chambers and thermal shock chambers. This guide maps six selected IEC parts to the equipment categories a buyer should evaluate.

IEC 60068-1:2013 sets out general environmental-testing guidance. The series is not one chamber specification: cold, dry heat, temperature change, damp heat and combined climatic–dynamic tests place different demands on the equipment.

Six IEC Parts and Their Equipment Routes

The matrix identifies equipment to evaluate, not model-specific compliance. The editions cited are the source publications; use the edition and procedure adopted by your project.

Cold and Dry Heat: Account for the Specimen’s Operating State

IEC 60068-2-1:2025 covers cold exposure; IEC 60068-2-2:2025 covers dry heat. Both include heat-dissipating and non-heat-dissipating specimens, energized or non-energized. These tests address exposure at low or high temperature, rather than the effects of temperature changes.

A High and Low-Temperature Test Chamber may serve both tasks when it supports the chosen procedures. Humidity control is not required simply because the test is called cold or dry heat. A temperature humidity chamber can also be considered for temperature-only work.

For a SANWOOD chamber inquiry, distinguish an unpowered storage exposure from an operating specimen that releases heat. That difference affects the load against which heating, cooling and temperature control must be assessed.

Temperature Change: Select Na, Nb or Nc Before Choosing the Chamber

IEC 60068-2-14:2023 separates three methods with different equipment implications:

  • Na — rapid temperature change. The 2023 edition allows two-chamber or one-chamber implementations, subject to the required arrangement and performance. A thermal-shock cabinet is one equipment option.

  • Nb — temperature change at a specified rate. Evaluate a programmable temperature-cycling or rapid-temperature-change chamber against the required rate and profile.

  • Nc — rapid temperature change using two fluid baths. This is not an air-chamber requirement.

SANWOOD’s Rapid Temperature Change Test Chamber and Thermal Shock Test Chamber categories support different equipment discussions. Identify whether the procedure specifies an air-temperature change rate, specimen response or transfer time. These quantities are not interchangeable, and a matching temperature range alone does not resolve the choice.

Damp Heat: Distinguish Cycling from Non-Condensing Exposure

IEC 60068-2-30:2025 combines high humidity with cyclic temperature changes, generally producing condensation on the specimen. IEC 60068-2-78:2025 addresses high humidity at constant temperature without specimen condensation.

Both point toward a Temperature Humidity Test Chamber in the SANWOOD range, but the configuration review differs. Cyclic damp heat requires the full temperature–humidity sequence; steady-state damp heat requires the specified operating point and exposure duration while maintaining the non-condensing specimen condition.

Provide the actual temperature–humidity combinations, not separate temperature and humidity limits. The product name “constant temperature and humidity” does not by itself establish support for both procedures.

Combined Tests: Define the Chamber and Dynamic Equipment Together

IEC 60068-2-53:2010 covers combined climatic and dynamic testing, including vibration or shock. The required combination and its timing determine how the equipment must work together.

For SANWOOD’s AGREE Test Chamber category, specify the climatic profile, dynamic input, specimen mounting and any existing vibration equipment. The proposal should identify the chamber, dynamic equipment, fixtures, interfaces and control/recording responsibilities. An AGREE label alone does not establish shock capability or complete-system integration.

What Should an IEC Capability Statement Establish?

A useful equipment statement names the IEC part, edition and method, then identifies the offered model, options, load conditions and supporting performance evidence. A list of standard numbers cannot provide that information.

Actual test conformity also depends on specimen preparation, execution, measurements, records and any deviations. Keep those test responsibilities distinct from the chamber’s documented capability.

Discuss Your IEC Test Requirement with SANWOOD

Contact SANWOOD about your chamber configuration with the adopted IEC part and procedure, test profile, and device under test (DUT) dimensions, mass, loading arrangement and operating state. Include known heat dissipation and, for combined tests, the dynamic input and existing equipment details. These inputs give the configuration discussion a defined basis.
