With the rapid development of the global low-altitude economy, flying cars are moving from concept to reality. However, this new type of vehicle faces tougher environmental challenges. Environmental test chambers, as key test equipment, play an indispensable role in the development and certification of flying cars.

Concept of Flying Car

Flying Car, also known as Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing Vehicle (eVTOL, Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing), is a kind of vehicle with the ability of ground travelling and air flight. It combines the features of a car and an aircraft, aiming to solve the problem of urban traffic congestion and promote the development of low-altitude economy.

Difficulties faced by flying cars

Flying car combines aviation and automotive dual technology, and its operating environment faces multiple extreme challenges: low temperature at high altitude, high temperature on the ground, strong airflow vibration, electromagnetic interference ...... Failure of any one component may trigger a chain reaction, resulting in irreversible consequences. Sanwood's environmental test chamber can simulate extreme working conditions to provide ‘full life cycle’ reliability verification for flying cars, covering the whole process of R&D, mass production and certification.

The core components test scene analysis

Power battery system

High and low temperature cycle test: -40℃~+60℃ charge/discharge performance verification (simulate extreme cold/high temperature environment)

Thermal runaway test: crush and nail, overcharge, short circuit safety (test standard: UN 38.3, UL 2580)

Low Pressure Test: Battery airtightness under low pressure environment at 5km altitude (Test Standard: RTCA DO-160 Section 4)

Inertial navigation module

Compound vibration test: gyroscope drift due to random vibration + temperature shock (-40℃~+70℃) (test standard: MIL-STD-810G Method 514.8)

Damp heat aging test: the stability of the circuit board under long-term damp heat environment (test standard: IEC60068-2-78)

Communication Module

Temperature shock test: -55 ℃ ~ +85 ℃ rapid temperature change under the signal stability (test standard: GJB 150.5A)

Multipath interference test: anti-interference capability in complex electromagnetic environment (Test standard: RTCA DO-160 Section 21)

Carbon fibre composite fuselage

UV aging test: simulated plateau strong ultraviolet radiation 1000 hours (test standard: ASTM G154)

Salt spray corrosion test: 5% NaCl solution spray to verify the corrosion resistance for coastal/offshore operations (Test standard: GB/T 10125)

In addition to the above core components, the key systems of the flying car, such as the electric drive system, flight control computer, vector servo, etc., also need to undergo comprehensive safety and reliability tests to ensure that the whole aircraft meets the strict airworthiness certification requirements.
